If you can get into Safe Mode check the Event Logs to see if there are anything Warning or Errors listed which are occuring at the same time you logon.

Run Scan disk or as it's called on XP Error checking in safe mode.

Start>My computer>right click c:.>properties>tool>error checking.

run a virus scan and spyware scan in safe mode you may have a nastie
