Play-doh is an excellent way for preschool aged children to build mucles in thier hands and increase fine motor skills. This helps later on when learning to hold a pencil properly and begin writing. Often grade school children complain writing makes their hands hurt after only a few minutes of writing. Usually these children have poor muscle tone in the hands so playing with play-doh could help these children as well.

Play-doh allows children to be creative. Children under three shouldn't play with play-doh without supervision. Play-doh allows children to get the feel of different textures, because play-doh doesn't feel like most things, and it allows them to create whatever they want.
Play-doh can also be incorporated into lesson plans to make them more fun for children.

Play-doh is fabulous not just for promoting creativity, but also for developing the fine motor skills needed for writing. Working the hands in rolling, pushing, pulling and manipulating play-doh helps to strengthen the small muscles of the hands to prepare them for the muscles needed for writing.

My son is 2 1/2 and we play with Play-Doh. He only plays with it when I am right there. He's never tried to eat it, so not all kids under 3 will eat it. I think it depends on each child, but adult supervision is necessary. I participate in the Parents As Teachers Program, and our teacher recommended it at least 6 months ago to us. It was really great when he couldnt' talk well and was frustrated. We'd get it out and he'd play with it by mashing it, squeezing it, and I think it helped relieve frustrations. Now he's learning he can make things out of it, so it promotoes creativity.

Like a good old mud patch, play-doh allows the child to see and feel the texture without the messy condition. It also helps the child's motor skills by creating anything that comes to mind and it heightens the imagination

Plain and simple it is fun and there is no wrong or right way to do it. It is true it helps develop small muscles, it is open ended, and it is developmentally appropriate. It helps children calm themselves when they are upset or stressed out because it is a very tactile activity. It is also something children and adults can work with together. I love playing with play doh and I am in my 40s.

Play-doh is good for children because they can use hand muscles and make things and not write on walls or were they shouldn't.

It is not good for children under three who will only put it in their mouths, although it is non-toxic.
The value of Play-doh is that it is an open-ended activity for preschoolers which allows them to explore their world. It also provides a sensory experience and fosters small motor skill development.

cause and effect: what happens if i roll this? what happens if I mix these two colors?
self expression
imagination
different textures
motor skills, helps develop the muscles in the hands
art
social skills if they are telling someone what they made.
the homemade playdough with flour and salt won't hurt a child if they taste it.
If the child is in preschool and/or they have very involved parents by kindergarten they will know their letters, numbers, colors, shapes, self care, and motor skills.
if the child didn't have much involvement they will have a hard time in school and may not even pass the kindergarten screening.

It develops motor skills and creativity. You can also use it to learn colors and a quite a lot of other things depending on the adults creativity.

I wouldn't let children under three play with it. Smaller kids will just eat it.
