Simply stated, religion is sanctified chauvanism. Meaning, any specific religion is bound to it's location. So if you are a member of a particular group or race of people, and you want to separate yourselves from the group which holds power, you take a story or myth and change it to suit the group in which you belong.
A good example of this is the story of Cain and Able. To quote Joseph Campbell on the subject,
"There's a very amusing Sumerian dialogue that appeared about 1500 years earlier than the Cain and Abel story. It's about a herder and an agriculturalist competing for the favor of the goddess. The goddess chooses to prefer the agriculturalist and his offering. Well, the Jews come into this area, and they're not agriculturalists, they're herders. And they don't have a goddess, they have a god. So they turn the whole thing upside down, and make God favor the herder against the agriculturalist.
The interesting thing is that throughout the Old Testament, it's the younger brother who overturns the older brother in God's favor. It happens time and time again. This is simply a function of the fact that the Jews come in as younger brothers. They come in as barbaric Bedouins from the desert, into highly sophisticated agricultural areas, and they're declaring that although the others are the elders - as Cain was, the founder of cities and all that - they are God's favorite. It's just another form of sanctified chauvinism. You understand the view of exclusive religion, don't you - "You worship God in your way, I'll worship God in his."

The question is, why are there so many themes in mythology that are similar to judeo-christianism? Come on, the Gilgamesh epic? Post-dates the telling of the story of Genesis by about 300 years!

Because in Gods word, He tells us clearly, for every word of truth, there is a lie, a copycat that deceives. For every light, there is a darkness that the devil brings in to dedeive.
So, the reason mythology can be similiar in a few ways to Christianity, is the way they have copied it, brought error into it, and use it to take down so many ppl and keep them from Jesus Chrsit.
Example of this idea. A person comes from a bad childhood and has no self esteem, hates self, etc. But, in Christianity we tell them they must learn to love themselves as God loves them, not being better than anyone else, but not less than anyone else. In comes new age bullonie, saying Yes, but if you begin to like yourself too much, you get cocky and arrogant. oops, back to low self esteem.
when in reality, we are to give ourselves the esteem God gives to us, knowing we are equal to others, no worse than or more than. And not letting anyone else definie who we are or our value.
See. thats just one exampleof how a darkness LIE will come in to undo the truth, the light.
Jesus is the light, the way and the truth, and the ONly way to salvation. Chooose HIm today.
