No not at all.
Elijah and Jeremiah went through this. It is a sign of a persons faith being tested.
Prophets that were given signs from God regarding the Apocalyptic events were often depressed because of what they knew was going to happen to loved ones that were rebelling against God.
It is a natural response, kind of a warning sign that we need to get our act right.
Action cures depression, so we act to do good rather than evil. So depression is more of a convicting power from the Holy Spirit to bring about a closer walk with God.

Not directly from depression (which is a chemical imbalance) but it could be a negative factor. I have very severe manic depression and I saw some of the top rated psychiatrists in the country. Nothing worked. I keep wanting to believe that there is a God even when that is very hard to do. Maybe I am starved of the Holy Spirit? I don't even really know what a Holy Spirit actually is but I'm missing something big.

NO...It is a medical condition which causes the chemicals in your brain to be out of whack. You can have too much or not enough. It can be treated medically with medication and also therapy. I would hope that this would not get confused with "signs" that a person lacks the Holy Spirit. You can be a good Christian and believe and love God and still suffer from depression. It is a bio-chemical condition.

Well, it could be....although i dont think so. I think that depression is just psycological when a person has soooo much stuff do deal with or when something extremely bad happend to them.....The presence of God in that person's life can fix that.
But there are many people out there who have the absence of the holy spirit, but are not depressed.

Many things can lead to depression's occurrence in persons. These can include (but are not limited to::
- Persons who have a biological tendency (through birth or ongoing stress) toward neurotransmitter variances in the brain's emotion centers have variations in mood that may be independent of events or may be triggered by events.
- Persons who have events that overwhelm their coping skills can become depressed because of a sense of powerlessness over their lives.
- Persons whose internal dialogue about themselves and their relationships focus on the negative aspects more than the positive aspects are at risk of becoming depressed.
These can all interact with one another, as well.
Religious beliefs do not innoculate anyone from depression nor encourage its presence. Oddly, though, some studies have suggested that depression AMONG WOMEN is a bit more likely if they are more religious. Speculation of the cause is that women who are in many religions find their choices constrained by the religion's moral teachings.

This makes about as much sense as saying disease is a punishment. I'm pretty happy most of the time and I don't possess the "holy spirit." I know Christians who suffer from depression, would you be saying they were bad Christians somehow and that is why they suffer from depression?

I think people that worry about things they have no control over is one reason for depression. You could grieve the Holy Spirit out of your life but it isn't from depression.

Actually from a medical standpoint it's either something getting them down psychologically or a brain-chemical imbalance... from a Buddhist perspective, when medical issues are ruled out, it's just a lack of correct view on reality.

No.
For Spirit filled Christians, you can still be depressed. Read some of David's Psalms (Ps 51 comes to mind). In some of them he was obviously clinically depressed.
My belief is that you can have the Spirit dwelling within you, but if you choose not to listen, you shut Him off. He's still there, but you are acting on your own, and you can get depressed.
