Please understand I know it is natural, but cats can easily urinate and cover it up in other places in the house, but they don't. I'm looking for an actual answer, not your guesses.

Because it's instinct. Cats want to cover up any evidence that they were there, so they cover up their waste. They don't want to let predators know where they were.

Since the litter box is the closest thing to the wild in a controlled environment, the cat buries its waste.

If kittens are left with their mother until they are 6 or 7 weeks the mother actually trains them. Cats are clean by nature so by in stink they will use a litter box where they can get their business covered up.

they don't. You put them there one time after they go somewhere else though, and the do et it. They are much smarter ten most animals and understand what you're trying to tell them.

There is training, it's just very quick. Also, if your litterbox sells like other cats or previous cats and is the only place in the house that smells like that, they understand that too.

Since your words are so eloquently put. Cats urinate in the litter box because the like to scratch in sand to urinate so where there is a sandy place they will go. thus the litter box.

Because cats cover their boo boos and kitty litter is the only thing in the house they can cover them with. Or The kitty litter should be the only thing in the house to cover them with! If not then I am sure a little cat pee won't matter ! lol
