Sorry to tell you, but that wasn't the only time they did it. In 1972 was also a prediction year from them. There were three times total, but the last time cost them over half their members. You should study up on Charles Taze Russell to find out what they are really all about, and why they believe the way they do. Most of the beliefs they have are centered around Russell's inability to understand some of the teachings of the early presbyterian church. His publications were intended as a slap at the presbyterian church in general. Well, I got one thing to say about the whole not understanding thing. I may not understand how an atom bomb works, but if I get locked in a room with one and the timer ticking, I will still experience the effects of it. understanding is not required for the effect to be the same.
Hope this helps...

JC, man, I really usually like your questions and answers, but beating up Jehovah's Witnesses will not help them see the light! What's that old saying? "Even if you persuade me, you will not persuade me." Maybe find a new topic.

--I am sure you know that we do not believe that even though some overly zealous ones in our organization may have believed that at one time.
--Do you equate this with false doctrine like the trinity, hellfire etc. as being false prophets---Sounds like you are on that roll!
Is it a sign of being false prophets that your are suggestion such thought--sounds like it?
--If so then all of the disciples in the upper room in Jerusalem of 120 who received the "tongues of fire" must have been false prophets because they were wrong when they asked Jesus directly:
(Acts 1:6-7) “6 When, now, they had assembled, they went asking him: “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at THIS TIME(my caps)?” 7 He said to them: “It does not belong to YOU to get knowledge of the times or seasons which the Father has placed in his own jurisdiction. . .”--DID JESUS REPREMAND them as false prophets or chastise them---HARDLY!
--If that was your meaning-- that indeed was a cheap shot!
--Acts 1 is not a scripture?
--Well here is another, that shows concern that true prophets of Jehovah God were intensely concerned with:
(Habakkuk 1:1-3) “. . .: 2 How long, O Jehovah, must I cry for help, and you do not hear? [How long] shall I call to you for aid from violence, and you do not save? 3 Why is it that you make me see what is hurtful, and you keep looking upon mere trouble? And [why] are despoiling and violence in front of me, and [why] does quarreling occur, and [why] is strife carried?”
--AS TO THE TABULATING of a "time period" we are in --note unless this also does not meet with your approval, what Christians KNOW:
(1 Thessalonians 5:1-4) “5 Now as for the times and the seasons, brothers, YOU need nothing to be written to YOU. 2Â For YOU yourselves know quite well that Jehovah’s day is coming exactly as a thief in the night. 3Â Whenever it is that they are saying: “Peace and security!” then sudden destruction is to be instantly upon them just as the pang of distress upon a pregnant woman; and they will by no means escape. 4Â But YOU, brothers, YOU are not in darkness, so that that day should overtake YOU as it would thieves,”
--WE DEFINETLY BELIEVE--that we have been in the last days since 1914 in accord with Luke 21, Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Bible Chronology, AND EVEN TO SOME DEGREE--what people of knowledge of happenings had and have:

1914—A TURNING POINT IN HISTORY
Even after a second world war, many refer back to 1914 as the great turning point in modern history:
“It is indeed the year 1914 rather than that of Hiroshima which marks the turning point in our time.”—René Albrecht-Carrié, The Scientific Monthly, July 1951.
“Ever since 1914, everybody conscious of trends in the world has been deeply troubled by what has seemed like a fated and predetermined march toward ever greater disaster. Many serious people have come to feel that nothing can be done to avert the plunge towards ruin. They see the human race, like the hero of a Greek tragedy, driven on by angry gods and no longer the master of fate.”—Bertrand Russell, The New York Times Magazine, September 27, 1953.
“The modern era . . . began in 1914, and no one knows when or how it will end. . . . It could end in mass annihilation.”—The Seattle Times, January 1, 1959.
“In the year 1914 the world, as it was known and accepted then, came to an end.”—James Cameron, 1914, published in 1959.
“The whole world really blew up about World War I and we still don’t know why. . . . Utopia was in sight. There was peace and prosperity. Then everything blew up. We’ve been in a state of suspended animation ever since.”—Dr. Walker Percy, American Medical News, November 21, 1977.
“In 1914 the world lost a coherence which it has not managed to recapture since. . . . This has been a time of extraordinary disorder and violence, both across national frontiers and within them.”—The Economist, London, August 4, 1979.
“Civilization entered on a cruel and perhaps terminal illness in 1914.”—Frank Peters, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, January 27, 1980.
“Everything would get better and better. This was the world I was born in. . . . Suddenly, unexpectedly, one morning in 1914 the whole thing came to an end.”—British statesman Harold Macmillan, The New York Times, November 23, 1980.
--ESPECIALLY IN GODS eyes there is a time for ARMAGGEDON as the principle of his arranged times show:
(Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) “3 For everything there is an appointed time, even a time for every affair under the heavens: 2 a time for birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot what was planted; 3 a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build; 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to wail and a time to skip about; 5 a time to throw stones away and a time to bring stones together; a time to embrace and a time to keep away from embracing; 6 a time to seek and a time to give up as lost; a time to keep and a time to throw away; 7 a time to rip apart and a time to sew together; a time to keep quiet and a time to speak; 8 a time to love and a time to hat. . .”
--SO YOU WANT TO INVALIDATE-God's promised intervention, that Jesus validated?
--Have any idea who one of the greatest invalidators of all time was, HITLER!
---He invalidated the holacaust camps, the handicapped & the disabled he murdered and many other things he closed his eyes to ----by simply never going to the camps & hospitals and similar scenarios!
----YOU TRY HARD to be an invalidator of the only true hope & the time for mankinds relief, as Jesus strongly empasized ".....they kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
---You are in good company along with other invalidators--- resembling Hitler, more or less!
WHERE ARE YOUR REFERENCES--for INVALIDATING that there is indeed a time for armaggedon?
