Cat introductions need to be done over a couple of weeks. You can't just bang them together or they will never like each other.
Below there's a great link about cat introductions, if you follow the guidelines your cats will get on and even sleep together, eventually. But take your time, and keep them separate for a few weeks.

If you do get a kitten introduce the 2 of them over a dish of soft cat food. It really doesn't matter what sex but preferably you would want to get a female. If you do get a male kitten make sure that your old cat does not have any bad feelings toward the new guy. If he does and you leave them alone you won't have to pay for the new one to be deballed your old cat will do it for you and it might kill the kitten.
