I have a very old dog .He had several strokes. I will have to have him put to sleep. I have to move and can't take him with me. I need a vet to euthanize him at a small cost. I would also like to put his ashes in a urn. I live in Portland, OREGON.

I recommend you give Dove Lewis Animal Hospital a call and see if they are able to help. They are a non-profit emergency pet hospital with two locations in the greater Portland area. The second link is to all of the veternarians in the greater Portland area, many with reviews and/or discounts that may help.

Thanks for loving your pet and caring what happens to them now.

I am not a vet either but, have been in the same situation you are in now. Call around and ask. My vet gives me back the ashes in a very nice tin and box. It has a place to write about the dog and an area you can have engraved if you like. I know of people that have gone out and purchased an urn they liked. Sorry you have to go through this.

It costs about $35.00 to euthanize a dog, and there are services that will take care of your dog as far as ashes and you have to buy an urn, they aren't cheap. The vet can usually arrange that for you. call any vet in portland, that is the standard cost. To have your pets ashes it costs $150.00 approximately and they give you a small box with the ashes.

Call around to see if some vets will make house calls to euthanize your dog. I have heard of this, and it is better and more comfortable for the dog to be at his home setting. There may be an extra fee, so check and see what applies. Although cremation options are available, pets to be cremated must be transported to another location.

There are many Advantages and Disadvantages of euthanizing at home:
Many owners want their senior dogs to take their last breaths at home. These owners believe that an at-home euthanasia is less stressful for their seniors because they don't hear the sounds or smell the odors that they would encounter at an animal hospital.

Euthanizing your senior at home is a good option if your dog is too large or too ill for you to transport easily to a veterinary clinic. Ending your dog's life at home also allows you to control the environment in which your dog passes away: You can give your senior all the creature comforts you want. And if you euthanize your dog at home, you don't have to face a bunch of strangers in a waiting room.

One final advantage of putting a senior dog to sleep at home is that the other pets in the family can see the dog's body, and thus come to terms with his death. Seeing the body gives your other pets the closure they need. Many experts contend that without having this opportunity, other pets in the family may search endlessly for the deceased dog and even suffer symptoms of depression, such as appetite loss and lethargy.

However, at-home euthanasia also has some disadvantages. One disadvantage is that your regular vet may not make house calls. If euthanizing at home is important to you, you need to find a vet who can perform the procedure in your home, and that's an issue you may not want to grapple with right now.

To find a vet who will euthanize your dog at your home, the American Association of Housecall Veterinarians has a searchable database that will help you locate a house-call vet in your area.

I'm not a vet but I think I can help. First I'm sorry about your dog.
Call around to differnt vets. They all seem to have differnt prices for what you want to have done. Having them creamated and a urn just with your dogs ashes in it is not cheep. I had my Goldens done and each cost me 100 dollars. If your pet is much smaller than it will be less than that.

You need to locate a vet where you are. Nobody can put your dog to sleep over the internet.
