The New King James Versions renders this as: "And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David did more so." David's love for his friend Jonathan was greater than Jonathan's love for David. He who weeps much loves much.

What translation did you use I have the NIV and it say, "After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground. Then they kissed each other and wept together but David wept the most."

David and Jonathan were upset over the idea the David was to become King after Jonathan's father Saul and they knew that this would because of Saul's death. It is significant because you would think Jonathan should wept more at the idea is father would die.

41 After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground. Then they kissed each other and wept together—but David wept the most.

Means that David wept more then Jonathan. He "exceeded" Jonathan's weeping.

Both NAS and NIV versions say that David wept the most. Jonathan and David were parting and had been such good friends that it hurt to part ways with each other.

Here's Rashi's commentary on the subject:
from a place toward the south (lit., from by the south. Jonathan renders:) =from the side of the travelers’ (or sign) stone which was toward the south.

until David exceeded = He cried more.

In this cases, exceeded means moreso. In other words, David wept more than Jonathan did.

David and Jonathan wept together, David wept more. Both were warriors but also men of tender hearts. They were loyal FRIENDS and committed to each other even in difficult circumstances.

It was a sad time when they departed from each other...being such good friends...

The term 'exceeded' means david gained control of himself after much weeping.
