I am also wondering why Jesus had to leave for the Holy spirit to come. The Holy Spirit was around and active before Jesus left, so what changed?

According to Jesus, the Holy Spirit´s role would be to:

1. Guide us to all truth;
2. Remind us of all things that Jesus spoke to His disciples.

You're right, the Holy Spirit was active on Earth before Jesus' ministry ("The spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters", Gen. 1:3).

What changed was that the time for Jesus' earthly ministry came to an end. It is now the time for the Holy Spirit to do its work in the Church.

A simple way to understand what the Holy Spirit is, is this:
The holy spirit is energy God's power. When he created Adam, he blew into his nostrils (filling him with the holy spirit) and he came to be alive.
So look at it like this. The holy spirit is PG&E and all humans are connected to it. However when the power goes off, we die.
Just living, breathing, is evidence of the holy spirit (and why no human can ever successfully Create life). When Jesus was on the cross he called out 'why do you abandon me?' which was the point where God withdrew the holy spirit from him so he could die.
I believe that since Jesus was the Master Worker (he created basically earth and humans through the holy spirit, a contractor if you will) that once he was back in the heavens he used it liberally to 'super charge' his apostles, maybe giving extra of that holy energy for them to be able to perform miracles, speak in tongues, etc.

Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God the father are 3 in 1. They are referred to as the Godhead. The holy spirit lives in us when we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior. The holy spirit still is around. Jesus left to pay the price for our sins according to God's will.

Whatever your relationship with God, it is the result of the Holy Spirit. Humans left to their own devices do not seek God ( the one true God that is). This is evident in society today, with the new god being the god of self, that humans are the god of their own universe. Now there's a fictional god if i ever did hear one. The Holy Spirt works in the life of every believer and is the reason they came to believe. Whether we believe or not is up to God's soveriegn will. But people still get a choice in whether they believe or not! The bible presents both of these, the individual will of man and the soveriegn will of God without any hint of contradiction. The fact that if God exists he would be outside of time, space and matter seems to have slipped the mind of some atheists/agnostics. God is not a tyrrant as he allows feewill and free choice. But he is bound by the Justness of who he is. Whether we believe in God or not, doesn't change whether he exists or not. The real god delusion, is the delusion of that our own reasoning is supreme. People, seeking to escape the concept that we will one day be held accountable for our time on earth, have deluded themselves into disbelief.

"hat can we expect the Holy Spirit to do in our lives?"

nothing... absolutely nothing. dont expect anything from god or anyone else. you do things for yourself. dont rely on anyone or thing.

"I am also wondering why Jesus had to leave for the Holy spirit to come. The Holy Spirit was around and active before Jesus left, so what changed?"

when Jesus left the earth... from what i know. he just opened up the gates to heaven.
and how it changed when Jesus came into the picture, is that... well.. before Jesus came around god (according to the bible) was portrayed an a very vengeful figure. when Jesus came around he offered unconditional love.

I can expect the Holy Spirit to guide me toward a greater knowledge of the Father. I will allow him to be a light unto my path . I can expect to grow more Christlike under the Holy Spirits' guide.
The plan you speak of is Gods' not mine--The Bible says (Jesus speaking) "I have come that they might have life and they might have it more abundant."
Jesus promised that he would not leave us comfortless that we would have a Comforter-which is the Holy Spirit.
I will not question his plan....I will believe, for he is the author and finisher of my salvation.

I suggest everybody study the Bible accurately. Jehovah's Witnesses offer free Bible studies to anybody earnestly seeking the truth of the Bible. It's a blessing to know the truth and know God's will and purpose. It becomes a refuge from this wicked system of things under Satan's control. Try it!
