well its difficult for a sigle person to do.
but surely even one person can make a difference.

do not give materialistic or non materialistic item to organisation and institue because they take all the stuff u gave adn sell it off. the poor hardly get the fruit of ur hard work
i wud suggest u go directly and give away ur old clothes. collect from ur neighbours and school and office people tooa dn go personally to delievere them to the poor. get some food suffs (dry food) like rice and pulses and grains.
collect from each family of ur neighbour or from ur ffice or school students can have this like a project and give to the poor.
also all u friends can share ur pocket money and one day food for atleast few poor who do not have things to eat.
not only food and clothing, any unused old vessels, broken but still manageable for other wokr kind of domestic things can be givent o them instead of throwing them in trash.
if ur pencil is too smal to use to write collect al small pencils nad eraser adn sharpners adn the used note book u have some unused papers. collect those give to teh biniding store they will get a book made of that and u can share it with the poor.

well i am telling this because when i was in india i used to do this. now plannign to sponsor a kid in few years.

poor people will always be around, but you can ease their burden by "adopting a family" providing canned goods, buying clothes or gifts. household products. You can also ask at your church about adopting a community in a foreign country and ask your congregation for donations.
Give to your local food bank and/or donate money.donate clothes, women and childrens to the women's resource center.they also need cribs, carseats, household appliances etc. so they can get help and start over.

donate money to the welfare , u dont have to specifically donate money to welfare but just donating money is good way to help or donate canned goods like campbells soup can or somehting liek that.or help with the community or start a charity to help those poor people in a different country.
