I think because we want a quick fix. Specially if you feel down a shot of alcohol will put you in the mood, Even though after the effect passed we end up with a bad hangover. I personally don't drink shots anymore. once at year I may have a shot of Jagermeister with my husband if any.

Its a mixture of the following elements:
a) Peer pressure - being cajoled into being a lad by downing the shot as quickly as possible
b) Loss of reasoning through excessive alcohol consumption - you are already so drunk that you have lost all sensibility
c) Wanting to get drunk quickly - you've turned up to the bar late and all your mates are well inebraited, therefore you are playing catch and need to get drunk as quickly as possible
d) You're celebrating - you've got something to drink for so its tradition to buy several shots of nasty stuff and hand it out for a ritual toasting

Some people don't do shots, they have to have them mixed in. Others like the taste. I normally see freshmen in college doing shots...or just people who are out to get drunk...and fast

D) Because its fun and seems such a good idea at the time

I know I often wonder that when Im asked to pour 20 aftershocks on a thursday night!
I dont see the appeal myself they taste like S**T and cost nearly the price of a beer!!

We don't-that always bugs us when people down a shot of something that they quite clearly don't like! We only drink shots of stuff we like the taste of; Sambucca,J.D,Ouzo,Tequila etc..

so we can get drunk quicker, make a complete *** of ourselves, be sick everywhere, fall over, pull the ugliest man/woman on earth, get up the next morning feeling rough as hell and not remember anything after the shots!!! then plan what night were doing it again!!!

you are on a night out to have fun and get steamin - so the whole point in drinking shots is to get you off your ti*s and have a great laugh.

Usually, when you do that you are with other people and its fun. I don't know anyone who sits by themselves and does shots . You are having fun and everyone is getting blasted together.
