I completely understand where you are coming from. My mother happens to self-rescue animals that have been bred to fight. I can't believe she puts her life in danger that way but there you go. She currently has two full-blooded pits that are as gentle as can be. I will admit to being scared of these dogs when she first got them. They are both covered in scars and are very muscled and were extremely aggressive. It took 4 years to retrain the male pit that she has, but now I love these dogs to death. As to why people hate them, I would say the media. Newspapers, magazines, television they all have had articles about pit bull attacks. Many housing communities will not allow you to own one. Where I'm currently living will not allow them. As long as people breed pits to be aggressive there will be fear. As compassionate people we must understand that the dogs are what they were bred to be. They are an aggressive breed that are very loyal to their people. With most pits they own you not the other way around.

Here is an article that you might find interesting, you'll know which story I'm talking about...

I have met some very sweet pits and thought they were lovely---but I also understand why some folks are nervous around them.

Unfortunately for all the nice pits and their owners, pit and pit mixes have developed a bad reputation.

While people can debate whether the cause is irresponsible owners, mean owners, poor breeding or a flaw in the breed, the fact of the matter is that more serious dog bites are caused by pits and pit mixes than any other breed. (In the US)

I will throw in another factor here: the physique of the pit means a bite from a pit has more potential to be serious or deadly than say---for example---a border terrier. So maybe there are other breeds who bite quite a bit, but their bites aren't as serious so they are under-reported.

Even taking under-reporting into consideration, the fact remains that pit and pit mixes bite more and do more damage than other breed of dogs. Why do pit and pit mixes cause so many bites? Is it the breed or the owner? That is what people argue about.

So knowing that between November 1982 and November 2006, labrador retrievers (the most popular breed in the US by far) caused 2 deaths in the US and Canada---in one case the lab was rabid in the other case the lab was part of a pack of 23 dogs----and that pitt bull terriers caused 104 deaths, do you see how people might view a pitt as more dangerous than a lab?

I don't hate any dog because of its breed, but I do understand that there is a reason people will fear one breed more than another.

Is it racism? No.

Dogs are not people. The whole point of having different breeds of dogs is to enhance certain traits and create dogs to meet certain expectations and have predictable behaviors. So I expect a retriever to want to chase a ball thrown past his nose. I expect a scent hound to want to sniff the ground and so do most reasonable people who have seen a scent hound.

Pits were developed as fighting dogs and although they were supposed to fight other dogs (not people), the fighting legacy lives on in people's minds and expectations.

Love your dogs and have fun with them.

Pits do get a bad rap, and I think thats because alot of
people who own this breed make the dogs aggressive on
purpose. These dogs have killed so many kids and injured
many people. But I think with any breed the owner is
responsible to teach the dog properly. Some people are
just afraid of dogs of any size. Having a pit these days
probably does come with some amount of grief from others
but not all of them are aggressive as you say.

People are anti-pit for the same reason they were anti-rotty and anti-doberman previously. They are the current fad dog for people who want 'protection' (defined as a dog that will be used for fighting or have that temperment), and for idiots who dont bother to train their dog (leading to aggression).

Because of the above reasons, pits are not well bred in many cases. While other dogs prone to aggression tend to be bred for better temperment, many pit breeders are either breeding with whatever is there just to get more pups, or intentionally breeding a more aggressive dog.

Unfortunately the stupidity and insanity of these dog owners ruins the reputation of the dog. Pits are not bad, it is the owners who are bad. Give it a few years, train your properly, get the word out that theyre great dogs. Their reputation will come back just as it does for similiar dogs.

(PETA supports the complete destruction of the pit-bull breed-they do a lot of underground work to support the view of the pit-pull as aggressive and evil.)

really its because stupid ppl have made them a 'bad breed' i feel there are no bad breeds just bad owners..as Any breed can turn if no treated right....but for some reason its cute to have a little dog with aggression..i don't find it cute just because it small and it could attack doesn't mean that its bite is gonna feel any better then any other dogs...
i love pits i took in a stray one once..he was the cutest thing with his pink elephant in his mouth. but he was abused...i could not take him by the collar as he would freak and try to bite me...he would not leave my living room for 2 weeks...He had no traing other then being beat....after about 2 months of working every day with him i start to find him a good home. he is still there and all though he had a rough life they now have kids and he's a great dog ....just because they have had a bad past doesn't mean they have no future.

it sounds like your a good owner...and pits at one time were veiwed as family pets not fighting dogs...the AKC see them as Amstaffshire terriers...(ye it is the same breed...they can be regisiters with them and reg. with the CKC which i don't like the CKC but....they reg them as Amer. pit bulls

All species (plant or animals) are divided into competing sub-species. We call ours races. No - despite the mindless slogans that the stupid masses parrot about the "human race" there is no such thing. There is a human species that is divided into sub-species. The same for the mindless slogans about racial equality. Equality does not exist anywhere - even among twins. It is a myth. Each sub-species has it's general strengths and weaknesses and the same for individual creatures since they may have the traits of there sub-species to varying degrees. It is natural, healthy and required for survival that all creatures practice sub-species ism. For dogs and horses we call the sub-species breeds and they have been bred by man in ways that naturally never would occur in order to achieve results we wanted.

Hate is a natural healthy protective emotion that springs from and only exists in connection to love. In order to eliminate hate as the mindless slogans say we must eliminate love. If your love is strong your hate will be equally strong. Those that do not give much of a hoot about anything or anyone (even themselves) will have a hard time mustering much hate. We naturally hate those and that which is a threat to whom and or what we love. Those sub-species that are closely related are usually great enemies since they compete for the same resources and territory and thus are a threat to each other. The history of racial intercourse shows that to be true. the stronger, superior normally dominate the weaker inferior. Today the Caucasoid race is commiting racial suicide and that is not natural but a great perversion of natural law.

However according to the equality myth all dogs are equal in strength size and temperament as is the same for all animals. Go tell breeders to mix breeds willy-nilly.

It's just like everything else, the good has to suffer for the bad. They had some bad dogs, and they think that all pit bulls are bad. I worked for a vet for 5 years, and the meanest dog I've ever seen was a sweet looking cocker spaniel....that went wack suddenly....like he was bi-polar. I was very happy when we were able to euthanize that dog.....because he had bit a child. Don't let it worry you.....I know pit bulls personally, and they are some of the sweetest dogs I know. I wish you the best of luck with them. Have a good day.

some people believe anything they see on tv. pit bull attacks are so incredibly rare, but because when they happen they are plastered all over the news, people think they happen all the time. it's just like people who are afraid of flying because they see crashes on tv. if pit bull attacks happened all the time, they wouldn't make the front page of the news folks! people need to understand that the media sensationalizes these rare cases and make a wonderful breed look like monsters. only those who have owned pits know what a truly incredble, loyal and loving breed they are. you have to have a thick skin to be a pit bull owner.

Doggy Racism? Depends on your definition of Racism.

Many people think that pit bulls have bad temperments and such, or perhaps they've had bad experiences with that breed. If that's the case, it wouldn't surprise me if that person was a bit ancy around pits. It isn't there fault that they have this view, and in the end, it's really the person who misses out on a loving doggy-person relationship.

I understand where you're coming from though, even though we're really polar opposites when it comes to breeds. I have a mini poodle, and many people expect her to be more of a cat than a dog. "There's nothing tuff about froo-froo poodles" they'd say. But actually, poodles were ORIGINALLY bred as hunting dogs, and water retrievers. The poofy hair cut they have was actually made simply to keep the dog's vital organs and joints warm when they were in the water! They weren't considered fashionable at all!

My dog may be small and cuddly, but she knows how to play, and even guard a house.

I bet our dogs would get along just fine, despite what other people may think. : )

I particularly have a shepherd too. Very sweet. yet this dogs WILL chew an interloper, and also you recognize you're to blame for all bites, no count number number why. you're suitable, tiny dogs could properly be vicious. the distinction is a chew from a chihuahua is at maximum going to require a stitch, yet your dogs is likely to split muscle from bone, and that takes years to get over. YOU or your insurance organization could could pay that, and any ensuing regulation tournament. SO, flow bond the dogs. No massive deal. you are able to bond it regardless of the truth that in case you own in case you want valid insurance.
