Even though some people are physically adults they have childlike emotions when people use the proper words for our reproductive organs. I remember when I was changing in a YMCA locker room, a women with her two children walked in while I was naked drying off, her son asked some pretty embarrassing questions about the naked women in the locker room. She put her finger to her lips and her other hand over his mouth. It`s these kinds of childhood experiences that make adults react in childlike ways. They think the word vagina is like a swear word, ( taboo), they should say" down there, or private area). For goodness sakes, you wouldn`t call your toe, "DOWN THERE", why call your penis or vagina that? This has always bothered me about some people, my husband was the same. He had no problems calling it a PU...Y, but vagina was a vulgar word. He`d yell at me if I said that word..Go figure? Not to mention the real complications of distinguishing what a child is saying about their private areas when they have been victimized by a sexual predator.. Vagina or penis is very explanatory.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I don't think that you should be bringing up body parts involved in intimate body functions with just any old person at any old time. I was taught that you discuss these sorts of things only with people who have a genuine need and interest in knowing about them-- which basically means people in the medical profession who need to know, people you're in an intimate relationship with, and people who are your closest closest friends in the whole world.
Otherwise, why would you talk to people about your vagina (or penis, for that matter)? Do you think they really want to have such a discussion with you?

The same reason they don't like the word "penis". Neither is a 'pretty' word, in by book. It's just not a good idea to throw around such words in mixed company, unless the goal is to offend.

because there are certain things that should not be discussed in public. If you say it a little more quietly, maybe people will not be so offended.

Maybe because it's a word associated with "sex" perhaps? And we all know how this is still "scary" territory for some.
