The shower
As a bridemaid you will need to buy some of the food, and drinks. You should help out decorating the place where the shower will be held. The maid of honour is the top leader and should have more say on what should be done, just help pitch in with the help she needs.

The wedding
As a bridesmaid you will have to buy your own dress and shoes (unless the bride as told you otherwise) You will go to dress fitting to make sure you dress fits, you will help the bride by doing little things that she needs help on, either it be party favors or invitations( she will ask you) You should offer your help to her and tell her that you are there if she needs you.

The bridesmaids should offer assistance to the bride on an as-needed basis. Bridesmaids should plan a wedding shower or in the case of a large wedding party, separate into groups and plan more than one shower if desired. It is ultimately the bride's day and a bridesmaid should offer a lending hand, a shoulder to cry on, and be moral support on the big day!

I've never heard of a bridesmaid with a ROLL unless she's buttering one and eating it at the reception.

However, traditionally, the bridesmaid has no ROLE in planning the wedding. As for showers, those are usually planned by female friends and/or relatives of the bride, who may or may not be in the wedding party.

The bride and her family and the groom and his family are responsible for planning the wedding.

You don't plan the wedding. If the bride needs help with something, you should help her. Your job is to help her if she needs it. You need to get with the maid of honor at see if she needs any help throwing the bridal shower & bachlorette party. You should offer to help pay for the parties. Bridesmaids should help the bride go dress shopping- if she wants you there. One bridesmaid (at least) should go to the final fitting with the bride. Some dresses require assistance to get into, and it can be tricky. Someone at the dress shop will show you what to do on the big day. Offer to help her with anything she needs help with and don't drop the ball. If she asks you to do something- do it!

basically you are there to compliment the bride. You should help her with questions, decisions, and opnions. the shower is typically thrown by the maid/matron of honour but you are certainly avaliable for help. Just be supportive and help out when asked.
