I worked for him for several years. What would be appropriate? Flowers? Sent to his family's home or the funeral?

If the funeral hasn't taken place, drop by to the funeral home for a short visit and make your condolences. If that's not possible wait a couple weeks and send him a short note tucked in a condolence card. If you are close to him and his family a nice fruit basket would be very nice as well. A phone call shortly after the funeral would also be nice. All of these options are fine, there in no one way to do this...nothing is right or wrong here. Do what feels right for you and trust me, he will be very thank-full.

A sympathy card to his home for sure and a modest flower arrangment or living plant to the funeral.

Depends on how close you are with him and his immediate family i.e. friends, socialize as friends. If yes, then flowers to his home with a card.
If not social friends, but had a business relationship only, a sympathy card sent to his home would be appropriate.

If you feel reasonably close to him still, flowers are thoughtful, but I think a card with a handwritten note (more than just signing the card) would be welcomed and appropriate.
