At restaurants that only takes bookings quite a long way in advance you can often get a table on the night because of the number of people that book and then either forget or end up having other stuff to do. Make sure you have a backup plan (another restaurant booking) then just give them a call early evening, if they have something free then cancel your other reservation. I've done this at 2 "hard to get into" restaurants - although never tried it at the Ivy.

I did once read that in LA, if you ring up the "hottest" places and pretend you are an assistant to say, Winona Ryder, you can get a table. I've never tried this and don't recommend it, but that would be the only way I can think of.
What happens when you turn up withour your "celeb", well, I suppose you just say that he/she was delayed whilst filming or something. Again, I am not recommending this course of action, if you try it and get into trouble, it's nothing to do with me!

Go to Langhams instead, it's far less pretentious. And the foods nice and not quite as stupidly dear as the Ivy.

Tables are released at 9am 3 months in advance, so you could try calling them at 9am 3 months in advance, obviously if you want to eat there earlier than that you wil probably need to follow one of the other answers.

Ask them, If the Queen wanted a table then you would find her a place, would you not? Then when they say yes, say well she's not coming i'll have her table.

Someone did this in a magazine a few months ago, just to see if it could be done.
They pretended they were entertaining a prince from another country and needed a posh place to eat....guess what they got in...unbelievable.

I use a website www.toptable.com. You can get discounts which is handy. Not sure if it will get you a table though.
