I think he really thinks it's sexy, and I just don't get it. How do I tell him I like something less juvenile on my man, without putting it that way?

Just tell him it is not working for you. It is a distraction. it reminds you of things that are not related to se x in anyway.
Then take him to the store, the naughty store and look for somthing together. even if you dont get him anything he is going to really like the idea that you took him there anyways. maybe you will get somthing in the end!

Get him a new pair of underwear that you would like for him to wear. Then as he is trying them on out with the spongebob and in with the new.

Buy him some new ones! He certainly will want to make you happy by wearing the ones you gave him. Then slip in and throw those things out. Get him a few new ones and he will never know they are gone.

Just tell him that he doesn't need his spongebob undies to be sexy to you. and then precede carefully with scissors and cut them slowly off of him. with tricky seduction the undies are ready for the trash.
