The majority of men will be wearing coat and tie, but it certainly isn't necessary. A sport coat or blazer without a tie is perfectly fine, a sweater is okay, and you'll probably see some who are much more casual than that.
So if you want to fit in best with the crowd, wear a coat and tie, but it's not a requirement.

I have worked for lincoln center, and produce orchestral concerts there 3 times a year. There is no set dress code for Avery Fisher Hall. However, there are certain performances that would certainly warrant a more formal attire. If you are going to a premiere, or a season opening you will find most men in tuxes and most women in dresses. If it is a special concert- for example a very famous soloist or a very famous quartet etc. . .again, dress the part. I have seen people there in jeans and t-shirts at concerts and at the same concert have seen people wearing suits. I recommend you wear a nice pair of khakis or dress pants and a nice shirt- jackets are not required. Of course, if it is a special occasion go ahead, dress up - no one wil lfault you for looking nice. I would never wear jeans to a nyphil concert, but no one will stop you from going in if you do. Think about the orchestra too, if everyone who went to a concert dressed like they do on the street, it wouldn't feel like a special performance. The Philharmonic is one of the best orchestras around so, you should dress appropriately.

Nope, just dress nicely. Nothing wrong with a tie though. Professional musicians are happy to see people sitting in the audience we don't care much about how the public is dressed; even if we ourselves are dressed in silly 19th century outfits. When I attend a classical concert I usually wear nice pants, shoes , shirt and a sport coat, tie optional.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to wear a tie to a NY phil concert. I'd go in like, a nice pair of khakis, nice shirt, comfortable dress shoes (not tennishoes!). You don't have to wear a suit. This is what I wore to Cleveland Orchestra concerts, and they're also one of the premier orchestras of the world.
