I work for a newspaper, our server was getting short on space so we started saving dates to a PC. Everything worked fine, when we needed a previous ad we just transfered from the PC back to our server (by the way the server is a PC), and our macs were able to use it. The hard drive on that pc crashed and I was able to recover the dates and they are now on my PC. The problem is when I transfer ads to the server the macs won't open them, and they show up as a pc document. Anyone know how to fix this or if there is a fix

The first thing to remember is that the Mac doesn't open files. Applications open files. What application on the Mac are you using to open the files? Are you using the File menu of that application or just double-clicking? Also, did you try opening the files from the Mac before you save them to the server? In other words, while they are still on your personal computer?

Just for a test, try downloading a simple photo from the Internet of type JPEG on your Windows box. Now save it to the server. Try to open it from the Mac. If it opens but other files don't open, you have an issue that is related to the file type and how it is saved on the server.

Have you tried to save a file from the Mac to the server after the "crash"? And if you can save them successfully, can you open them again from the Mac using the same application that created them? Also, after saving a file to the server from the Mac, can you open the file from your Windows box using the equivelant application?

After the "crash" on the server, what steps were taken to get it up again? Was the hard drive replaced or only reformatted? Was the file system the same or changed? Examples are FAT32 and NTFS. Which Mac are you using and which version of the OS?

I didn't give you a solution but I gave you the type of info we need to find the solution.

What kind of file is it?
If its something like Quark or InDesign, as long as it has the proper extenison, it should open.

Now fonts are a totally different animal.
Mac fonts saved to a PC, and then put back on a Mac will not work, they become corrupted.

It might be as simple as the files just got corrupted somehow in the process of going from the crashed HD to the new HD.

Hope that helps.
