Neither can be trusted??

Actually, a lot of legal terms are from Latin and a lot of religious terms are from Greek, so I guess that at least one similarity is that both have terminology that most of us don't know the meaning of.

They take common sense and translate it into incomprehensible gibberish. Then they interpret the "true" meaning back to us as if they are some kind of authority, and confused people generally tend to take their word for it.
