Look to the Bible. First Adam and Eve are naked and not ashamed, then they eat the fruit, now being naked is a problem. Interesting little bit of prudery that was tossed in there, probably out of the belief that nudity=sexuality.

Believe it or not, this country was not necessarily founded on "Christian" principles. A bunch of people who were intolerant enough to leave another country came and set up shop in the USA... bringing their warped views of humanity with them.
Nudity itself is not a problem. Naturists and nudists will attest to the fact that nude does not equal sex. Men don't walk around aroused all the time. It's just a relaxed atmosphere.
Hygenically, it isn't an issue either. When you're nude among others, you tend to pay attention to these things! Also, nudists will always carry their own personal towel to sit on - providing a barrier between their bodies and any surface on which they may sit.
The scriptures do not prohibit nudity. In fact, some of the prophets were instructed by God to stay nude for a period of time to prove a point to the others in that society. Would God instruct these prophets to sin? Of course not!
Peter fished nude, and Christ did not rebuke him for it.
Anti-nudity legislation is a cultural/religious belief which infringes on the rights of naturists and nudists. There should be appropriate areas set aside for nudity - a section of beach, a sauna, and of course, naturist resorts....

It's what we're used to. In the U.S., a woman without a top on at the beach is highly distracting. In Europe, it's just normal.
But the distinction with other animals is that we were silly enough to lose most of our hair, so we have to find alternatives.
Besides, if we didn't have fashion, think about all of the money we wouldn't be handing out blithely to retailers. Society as we know it would crumble!

A sweeper woman command respect of respectable gentlemen simply by manifesting a lady's shyness. But half-naked ladies in the street do not command any respect.
Human civilization should not revert to animal life and live naked without any culture, education and sense of morality. An intelligent human cannot live the life of an animal; rather, man should try to utilize his intelligence for self-realization. Advancement of human civilization must be towards the goal of establishing our lost relationship with God, which is not possible in any form of life other than the human.
Your mother was born naked, that shoul mean she will remain naked before you now? That is madness.

...because it is, well, distracting, for some of us :)...
Seaturtle - big lol at that,... not to mention you might even have a serious point there, just imagine a male elephant or a bull walking perfectly straight on its rear legs during the whole mating season - including while fighting other males, so before getting all scientific let me lol for a while longer...
edit again - well, our sexuality is really different from an animal's, for instance most of them have certain mating times, while humans mate no matter how and no matter when, so it would really be a constant distraction.

It's something that society in general is unaccustomed to, and nudity has become inextricably associated with sex in many people's minds. It is those people's minds which are the problem, rather than nudity per se.

Actually the wearing of clothes is the cardinal sin in God's eyes. He came unto Adam and Eve and kicked them out for covering up. In God's eyes, modesty and shame are two of the greatest blasphemies ever. Only misguided satanic zealots demand people wear clothes, because they have the audacity to suggest that the human body which God made is perverted and evil.
Lay down your pagan ways, false christians and heed not the snake in the garden. God made us all beautiful and in his image. Dare thee taint the visage of the Lord Himself?

This is just a convention. In hot places, and when everyone is used to it, nudity means nothing and no one has a problem with it. Try it.

In Western society many of our cultural values have been influenced by Christian believes and many of those have been more influenced by traditions or lack of knowledge than by the actual beliefs expressed in their book. Modesty was a big factor to the Puritans and that "value" was strongly implanted in America.
