You did not mention the state you are referring to. The law differs among the 50 US states. Each one may be slightly different.
Generally, there are two ways to remove a Governor from office: impeachment or recall. Impeachment is an act of the Legislature, usually requiring the filing of Articles of Impeachment outlining a criminal offense or abuse of power, and the trial and conviction of the governor by the state senate, acting as a jury. (As was done by the Arizona Legislature against Gov. Edwin Mecham a few years ago.) In that case, the next-highest state officer becomes governor. (Arizona did not have a position of lieutenant governor , so the state Attorney General becomes governor if there is a vacancy.)
The second means of removing a Governor is by recall in those states that have this procedure (not all states do). In this procedure, the citizens circulate a petition to gain enough signatures demanding a recall election, and outlining the reasons for his recall. If sufficient numbers of citizens have signed the petition, the Secretary of State of that state will certify a special recall election for the ballot, In that case, a majority vote of the citizens voting can recall the governor, and declare him excluded from office. Usually, a special election is held at the same time, and if the governor is recalled, the person with the highest number of votes becomes governor in his place. (note, the lieutenant governor or next highest officer of government does not automatically become governor in this case, as he does in the case of impeachment.) This is what happened in the state of California, when former governor Gray Davis was recalled, and Arnold Schwarzneggar was elected to succeed him.
Although there have been other states that have tried to unseat a governor, very few have succeeded, unless the governor was indicted and convicted for a criminal offense, and sent to prison.

The recall of elected officials requires a majority vote, usually a 2/3 majority in the legislature of the particular state. The first step is a petition and gathering enough signatures of registered voters to start the proceedings. This first step is a huge one and the required number of signatures is not easily obtained.

State legislatures can impeach state officials, including governors. The process varies by state... like in California the ppl can get enough signatures to demand a recall vote. IE, Arnold...

File a petition for a recall election signed by a minimum percent of the constituents in your locality citing valid reasons just like incompetency so that your governor will be removed if the people do not like him.

It would depend on the state constitution. Some have provisions for this, others don't. Some have to start in the legislatures, others are started by signatures to start bills etc. You'll need to read your states constitution. Otherwise, contact a legislator, and ask them.
