SOUND INTENSITY is the amount of energy crossing per unit area per unit time perpendicular to direction of propogation of wave. Unit is Watt per square metre( Wm^-2)
Lowest sound intensity perceived by our ear, i.e threshold of hearing(I0) = 10^-12 Wm^-2 .This was converted to decibel unit by Weber & Fechner
decibel level = 10 log(I/I0)
(shown by 'beta' symbol)
log is to the base 10
I is given sound intensity in Wm^-2
I0 is threshold of hearing
Threshold of pain is the max. intensity that we
can tolerate = 1 Wm^-2
= 10 log(1/10^-12) decibel
= 10 log(10^12) decibel
= 120 decibel
So response of our ear to sound intensity is logarithmic.

If it wasn't, most sounds would damage you immediately.
