I just purchased a shih tzu puppy from a local pet shop,he had blood in his stool which I noticed right away. I called the pet shop and they said its normal from deworming...however the vet said to bring him in and it was giardia. I am very concerned, should i return the puppy before my 14 days is over...I am very much attached and so is my 12 year old son. Help?

Giardia is a Parasite in the the intestines that thrive there. It is one of several Parasites that when treated properly will go away. The problem is that the Pet store needs to be informed as Giardia is contagious so if there are any other pups or kittens that have interacted they may have contracted it. Your vet should have prescribed medication which actually is available thru injection. I would suggest you present the bill to the pet store immediately if you have a clean bill of health certificate and ask them to either reimburse you for the vet cost and meds or reimburse you for the dog. If they refuse to reimburse you for the vet then get your money back but be sure to let them know that you are going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and that you will be notifying the State Attorney Generals office regarding their business practice of selling diseased dogs.

Giardia is an intestinal parasite. Just take the pup to the vet, and they will be able to get rid of it. There really is no need to return the pup to the pet store. You should keep it.

This is an infection of the intesional tract. Your vet should have expalined evrything to you about his. It's a tough thing to get rid of if not properly treated.
I'm hoping your vet gave you medication to clear this up.
Only the vet can tell you exactly how long it may take to clear it up and how bad it really is.
As far as returning the pup thats up to you, and what you willing to do and pay to get this pup healthy.

No don't take him back. Let the pet store know though in case it doesn't have a happy ending and so that they may test their other animals. I never suggest buying from a pet store. They don't take the best care of their animals. Always buy from a reputable breed or AKC/ SPCA sanctioned adoption center. Much healthier better line of dogs.
