I love when people ask this question. If you have 3lbs of muscle and 3 lbs of fat, which one weighs more? Duh they are both "3" pounds! Muscle takes up less space than fat. Think of this: a lead ball that weighs 7lbs(muscle) = the size of a tennis ball and a basketball that weight 7lbs(fat) Though they weigh the same the lead ball take up less space because it is less density
Density (symbol: ρ - Greek: rho) is a measure of mass per unit of volume. The higher an object's density, the higher its mass per volume. The average density of an object equals its total mass divided by its total volume. A denser object (such as iron) will have less volume than an equal mass of some less dense substance (such as water).

Not heavier, but the same "weight" of muscle takes less room than fat.
A 150 lb flabby woman will look heavier than a 150 lb muscular woman.

Muscle is more dense than fat. Think of it as a pound of gold as opposed to a pound of cotton wool. It's an anatomical fact.

Muscle weighs more than fat, because the cells are packed much more closely together than than fat cells are. The density of the cells = more weight for that particular tissue.

Muscle is denser than fat. Which is why many athletes weigh a lot even though they are not fat.
