my opponent leads with a straight right. i parry his punch to the side and slightly downwards with my left hand. i then throw a straight right over his right hand, that ive just parried downwards. as my right hand has traveled over the top of his right hand my punch would be called a overhand right.

If HE throws first, it is an over hand right COUNTER to be more specific. You can throw a few jabs and throw an over hand. It depends on YOUR hand's positioning, not what he did first. So yes, it is an over hand from your describtion, but also, being a reaction from him it is a counter also.
