In the job we call them "One Hundred Yard Heroes" meaning that they very bravely stand a good distance away from the police shouting obscenities. If the Coppers are not busy with another incident, ie: affecting an arrest, interviewing witnesses to a more serious offence, talking down a person who is mentally challenged and trying to either kill themselves or others, etc, etc. then the yobs in question would be spoken to. On most ocassions the Officers would ask them to curb their language warning them not to repeat obscenities under S.5 of the Public Order Act. If the yobbos continue then they could be arrested and the charge would read like this - "Using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress thereby." If the offenders plead guilty or are found guilty of the offence then they will most likely receive a fine and/or a Community Order and a Criminal Record. If, however, the Officers are dealing with a more important inquiry then it maybe that the yobs are ignored. Sometimes this is the best course of action.

Someone whom I loaned my car to was angry that an estate had been cleaned up because of a visit by one of the Royals,it was a s*** hole the day before and the day after the visit, so put a banner in the back window saying clean up the local corrupt police not the estate, that person was dragged from the car,c.s gassed and battered in the police station.
In court I said it was my car and wished to take responsibility, I was asked what would I do if the police decided to put banners up on the police cars saying Mrs 222222 was corrupt? my answer if it wasn't true I'd just laugh,
if it WAS true I'd arrest them assuming I had that power.
The magistrates laughed and dismissed the case.
I am not a yob, i'm ex Royal household staff, my skin colour doesn't matter but one thing I can't abide is police who abuse their power for their own gratification.
I'd want the police to send them on their way peacefully if possible and the shoppers to stick up for the police by making fun of the yobs

Police officers are human beings. Although especially trained, they can feel their personal safety is threatened under certain circumstances, and then they will react as any other member of the public would in the interests of their own safety
The tax payers of this country are paying for the police to keep law and order.
I would not expect a police officer to react any differently if he was called a b'...d than at any other time.
The reason I am not a police officer is that if you said that to me, I would come round your house in my off-duty hours and kick your head in.

No permit to protest? Arrests made for Breach of Peace or Disorderly Conduct at best. Things suddenly go to hell quickly? There's always "Inciting a Riot". Love that one...beautiful felony charge.
I've found though experience that most people who shout obscenities at police officers are usually no strangers to the inside of a jail cell.
Decent, hard working and productive citizens don't lower themselves to such ignorant displays in public. Those who have a criminal record and don't really care if one or two more charges get tacked onto it are usually the caliber of individual you refer to.
I've been called worse than an illegitimate person. Just remember....while the shouter gets to sit in jail overnight...I'm off to have a beer and maybe even get laid. Life is good sometimes.

they should do nothing...i thought we had a thing called free speech, and i think the police always come down harder on white people due to the racial discrimination laws, because you dont often hear about black or asian people racially abusing white people on the news...whereas white on black racism is always on the tv or in the papers. i mean if i went out and started a fight with a black guy, it would be looked on as racially aggravated, just because of his skin colour.

A group of more than 3 then you have incitement to riot or similar.
If they started being aggressive then you perhaps have affray.
Call in some backup and lock them all up.

listen...there is nothing wrong with the police having a scrap with yobs...as long as there are no weapons involved.....The coppers love a good scrap...most of them need their sprays and batons to subdue people....but there a good few fit young coppers who love a tear up....its been going on a long time in this country....and wouldnt it be boring if you couldnt get drunk and fight with a few coppers now and then...hee,hee

They won't., but I'd LOVE them to be able to get the water cannon out. That would not only disperse them but would give most of them a long-since needed wash!
