How long has this lasted? Does Motrin lower the temperature? Is his throat red or swollen? Does he have an earache? diarrhea? loss of appetite? If you think it is only a bug, personally I would not run him to the doc over this. People get scared with a fever but actually a fever is a good thing, it is our body's way of fighting infection. I would not take my son to the doc unless it was hitting 103 or 104 and staying there regardless of Motrin. OR if he was running a temp that spiking back up that high for several days in a row. BUT! if you are concerned and feel in your gut something is not right, go the doc regardless of what the thermometer says. Even if it turns out to just be a bug, there is no need for you to worry yourself sick. I know that part very well (having a 3-year old). Best of luck to you, dear.

Something you also have to consider with temperatures is what is NORMAL for your son. By that I mean that 98.6 is the AVERAGE normal temp for people. Some people run hotter and some run cooler.
My normal temp is 99.6 which means I run a little hotter than the average. Which also means I don't worry unless my temp is 103.
The way to find this out is simply to take his temp for several weeks when he is feeling well and see what it is.
To answer the Q, 101 really isn't much to worry about however DO NOT give him any kind of aspirin to relieve the fever, etc. This can cause Reye's (sic) syndrome and can be fatal. You NEVER give children aspirin when they have a fever under any circumstances because of this.

101 isn't very high..in fact most doctors don't want you to even give them tylenol or motrin until the fever reaches 103. I wouldn't worry just yet. Let his body fight the sickness..that's why we have fevers :0) If it gets higher than 102.5 or so, I would call the doctor and see what they want you to do from there. Good luck to you!

101 isn't a high temp for a 6yr old. but it's always a good idea to notify the pediatrician to let him/her know of a mild fever. give him childrens tylenol of motrin for a fever and see if it goes down. above 102.7 is when it gets to be serious.

With flu season in full swing and strep throat being passed around, I would take him to the doctor before the weekend so you do not have to try and find an Urgent Care Center that can see him.

I think that is high enough for him to be seen
