Since you are going from such a dark shade, you're probably going to have some issues when you go to lighten. Since dark hair carries a lot of red undertones, you'll probably get some really brassy highlights after you lighten, whether you use bleach or not. Keep in mind, lightening up your hair is not going to be a one shot deal. It's going to be a gradual process that is going to take quite sometime. If you try and do this all in one step you run the risk of getting a color you won't like, and seriously damaging your hair. Best advice, go to Sally's and ask for help or even call Clairol. They have repesentatives that can help you and can guide you on how to achieve the color you want. 1-800-252-4765 Monday - Friday: 8:30 am to 8:30 pm EST, Saturday: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST. Or you can even chat online with them. Follow the link to their page here. http://clairol.com/ask-clairol/ask-clairol.jsp

Well, I would definitely not suggest bleaching it.
That is an extremely bad procedure for your hair, especially if your hair is already very dark.
Mine was originally dark dark brown and I've taken it all the way to very light sandy blonde just by dying it the same color multiple times.
Realize though that dying your hair is very damaging, so you must follow the directions when it says to wait at least 4 weeks in between dying.
But if you go to the drugstore and find the color that you want it to be, I would suggest moving one step above that color and then trying that. You aren't going to have dramatic results because your hair is so dark. But once you start dying it lighter, if you keep using that same color, you will probably have the color you want in about 3 dyes.
I have been dying my hair since I was 13 (I'm now 19) and I've tried lots of different colors, so I have a basic idea~
just dont get disappointed if your first dye isn't as light as you want, its going to take a couple times cause your hair is so dark.
good luck!!

Go to Sally's Beauty Supplies and have a talk with the representatives there. They know what products are best considering the type of hair that you have-

it depends on whether there's already colour on your hair. if there is, then you definitely need bleach and you couldnt do it yourself but if theres no colour, it could be lifted with a dark blonde.

Use henna - it will lighten it, and it lasts about 4-5 months
