To your dog, you are the leader of the pack, the dominant alpha male or alpha female.
He doesn't think you are a dog, only the master, and craves love and affection, that is his form of recognition by the alpha being.
He knows who you are specifically by smell, they have a highly advanced sense of smell, and you have your own scent.
Sight does come into it as well but not as much as scent.

A dog's senses tell him we are another animal and a pack and predatory one like themselves! I don't think animals have names for themselves or us!
We are just a member of the pack but where in the pack? My girl sees me as Alpha female and my son as Alpha male but my hubby seems to be treated like a junior member of the pack! Perhaps because he is so rarely around! He goes away for days or occasionally a fortnight or more!
To learn how a dog thinks you have to study the wild relatives!

Of course they know you are not a dog (like them) THey do recognize you as part of the pack though. In most cases you are recognized as the leader of the pack. The alpha if you may.
There are two kinds of people... people people and dog people. I connect better to my dog than to people because my dog is always happy to see me. Never yells at me, always loves me , and unlike people will always be there for you when you need them the most. If people were like dogs I would like people as much as my dogs.

You are the leader of his pack so he sees you as a dog.
Dogs aren't concerned what their pack members look like-my 2 dogs consider me,my cat,my 2 ferrets,3 rats and cockatiel to be pack members too.

Yeh thats a hard one to answer. It is thought that they can see the difference and are aware that we are different but they have an inbuilt pack structure instinct so they see us often as the head of the pack or on the same level or below them, If you are head then they worship you, if on same level or below that when you get behaviour problems such as jumping, biting, growling.

Your dog recognizes you as another funny looking dog. He has no idea that you are a human, he doesn't even know what that is. To him you are just another dog, a funny looking one, but a dog non the less.

Dogs don't see us as they do other dogs. They think of us
as their masters. Some dogs try to be more dominant, but
they all seem to think they are in charge of the house.
Even if they do listen and obey commands, that is how they
think. Some dogs are very passive, and will pee if you
even walk by them, it's their way of bowing down to us.
They know were in charge.

Im sure dogs see us as they would see their mothers when they were puppies. I read somewhere that domesticated dogs never really grow up (as they would do in the wild..to fend for themselves). Therefore I think my dog sees me as his guardian. Im sure that dogs like being stroked because it reminds them of their mothers licking them when they were puppies :)
