was it like a tornado? or like and actual long-pillar shapped cloud? does anyone actually know? can we get more out of it in the ancient text?

I suspect it was a pillar, as in a tall column. First because a tornado type cloud would be destructive and there is talk of the pillar moving into the camp while Moses talked to God. Second, a pillar would be very visible to all the people and since it was a sign post for the entire people it needed to be something tall.

No, there is no proof that the exodus ever occurred. The closest reference in Egyptian writing is to a race called the Hab'iru who were immigrants in a small portion of Egypt. They were not slave and very little is written about them. Nowhere in Egyptian records are the plagues, 7 years of famine, Jacob or Moses ever mentioned or anything similar to them. Several of the well identified stopping spots of the exodus have been thoroughly excavated with no evidence of any human found, much less a large number of humans.

The Bible has been interpreted (language) as close to the actual meaning as possible. I don't know exactly what those descriptions mean but I have to assume that it fits whatever was seen by the people at the time.
