I helped a woman start her car yesterday and when I was done she said "thank jesus!". ??? Jesus didn't fix her car, I did. These people are really beginning to creep me out.

From remarks that I hear like that, the use of the word "Christian" as an adjective to describe "good and moral", and the suggestion that non-Christians are the opposite, I would say that "cult" would describe some, not all, of the people who are Christians.

Yes, it is a cult, the biggest one around. YOU fixed the car, not god. And you probably got the knowledge from common sense or a manual or prior experience, not god. I think jesus would have thanked you for fixing HIS car. That would creep me out, too.

Yes, any group of people with like beliefs and practices are a 'cult"; in modern times it has been misused to define those religious groups which practice beliefs outside the mainstream religions.

I was flipping channels last night and saw a boxer and his crew praying before the fight--like lots of sports figures do. WHat kind of world is this where people pray to their god to help them beat up someone else for their own personal glory! And people want religion put back in schools!

All religious beliefs, strictly by definition, are cults...however that is not the connotation we give to cults today and everyone knows that. Today we believe a cult exists when the leader of the church takes control of the lives of the members and takes power from God and puts it on themselves.

I praise God for the littlest things. Yes, you fixed it. And I am sure she was thankful for you. But understand, a lot of people that believe in God choose to put Him in everything they do.

With that said, there are fanatics out there that make people scared.

Ask yourself this...are you that narcissistic where you needed the praise instead of God? No disrespect in the question, just a thought.

No, Christianity is not a cult. That was very nice of you to fix her car...I can't speak to you of her thinking and reasoning, but for myself only. All I am, all I have is a gift to me from God and I am ever mindful of that. I would thank you for helping me, yet at the same time, I would thank God for His gift of you in my life at the time and place it was most needed. You weren't there by accident but by Divine Providence and for that I thank God.

Christianity isn't a cult because cults are small groups, and their teachings are restrictive and they don't encourage contact with non-believers, whereas Christianity requires, nay commands, such contact. Plus, as far as the "Thank Jesus" remark(if this really happened), she believes Jesus brought you to her to help her. Is that so bad?

According to dictionary.com, the first definition of a cult is "a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to rites and ceremonies."

So by that definition, it seems like Christianity probably is a cult.. Most religions would be cults according to that definition..

Christianity is the standard that cults are judged by.

No. But the name of Jesus isn't always used in a religious context. When something bad happens, we say "Oh Geez," which is a form of "Oh Jesus." It's taking the Lord's name in vain. In this situation, she was probably felt that God put you, with more knowledge in how to start a car than she had in her path, just when she needed it. She was giving credit where credit was due.

Also, God gave you that ability to start her car. He gave you the capacity to learn how to start a car.
