What your friend had was probably Cocktail sauce. You can buy it at the supermarket in the seafood section. If not there (or you wanna make your own) you can try this recipe (or try Tartar Sauce for a different kick):
COCKTAIL SAUCE
This cocktail sauce recipe is the perfect accompaniment to cooked shrimp.

1/2 cup chili sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1 small lemon)
1 to 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
dash Worcestershire sauce
few drops hot sauce
salt to taste
PREPARATION:
Combine and blend all ingredients well. Serve cocktail with shrimp, oysters, and other shellfish.
TARTAR SAUCE
Tartar sauce recipe contains mayonnaise, chopped olives, sweet pickles, and a little onion.

1/2 cup mayonnaise
6 pitted green olives
1 slice onion
2 sweet pickles, cut up
1 tablespoon capers
PREPARATION:
Blend all ingredients until pickles and olives are finely chopped. Serve with fish or fried seafood.

Sounds like cocktail sauce (the dish - shrimp + the sauce - is commonly called Shrimp Coctail). You may be able to find the sauce ready-made.
