I just changed a few months ago because I didn't like the one I was with. Then I lost my insurance. I did get on a sliding fee scale but I still owe 20% of the psyciatrist, 20% of my counselor, 20% of my anxiety group, 50% for my primary care provider,(not to mention my meds) and we are living on a fixed income.
So I was looking around the ohter day and noticed one where I can get FREE services.
Would it be ok or appropriate to change because of the cost?

If you can't afford your current psychiatrist because of the cost, then yes, I think it'd be fine to change. However, before canceling your appointments with your current one, make an appointment with the one you're looking into. See if you like the people/atmosphere and read the fine prints on the paperwork! You may find out that it's really not free.

Don't make any decisions until you know for sure!

Good luck!

Only if you are getting better mental health care If you are in Arizona do not go with free Value Options They are terrible Read a 4 page article in the paper about them. I'll probably be going on sliding scale with my shrink also

Of course you can change because of cost! I would tell your therapist you cannot afford the fees and ask them to refer you to another person/clinic. They know who costs more and less, trust me. They all know what their colleagues are charging, and if they say they don't know then ask their receptionist.

I would also like for you to call the manufacturers of your meds and see if they have a program where you can get your pills for free, or at a discount. I know Prozac had a plan back before it went generic. We had cards in our pharmacy from the Prozac drug rep to give out to patients in need of drug payment assistance.

Best of luck to you.

Yes, it is appropriate to change psychiatrists for any reason. Doesn't it make sense to make the change if it will alleviate the anxiety created by straining your budget? Staying on with the payments could be seen as counter-productive.
