I think it is very important to be polite. I have been in NYC for almost 4 years, and most people here act like robots. I do miss the Midwest and south where people are more polite and courteous.

If you are talking about the automated phone systems that everybody has now, I say just hang up. I personally do not know any robots, but I guess you should be nice to them. You never know when you might need a friend.

Polite no, the robot won't even notice. And, seriously, imagine yourself saying please and thank you to a coffee machine?

Respectful: yes. If you treat things with respect, you will feel better about yourself, you set a great exemple and there will be a better atmosphere... Respecting things shows a great deal of self-respect too.
In return, if you treat a robot with respect, if you maintain it etc, it won't break down as fast and do a better job.
