Whatever you do don't light a fire. If the bird can't fly out now the smoke wont help, it'll just kill it. If it is a baby bird, call a rehab centre and they'll tell you what to do depending on species, age, injuries, accessibility. If it is an adult bird and its stuck you can either catch the bird in the chimney and let it go outside, you can throw a towel on the bird a small butterfly net to catch it. Otherwise if its feasible seal up the room except for one exit open the fireplace and let the bird go out (cover any window that's not open or the bird might run into it). If the bird cannot fly, it may have injured itself in the chimney in which case it should be brought to the nearest wildlife rehabilitation centre, http://www.tc.umn.edu/%7Edevo0028/contact.htm to find the one nearest to you if it comes down to it.

If it still can fly, make loud noise at the fireplace opening. If it doesn't leave during the day, it might be nocturnal. So, at night, shine a flashlight up the fireplace opening and make loud noises that might indicate you are coming up the chimney. We had a raccoon and this is what worked for us.

If it can't fly, you need a chimney sweep to come to your house and get it out and then fix the opening to your chimney.

You might try calling the animal control in your area. They should be able to come out and help get the bird out of the Chimney for you. Even your local fire department "might" help you. The fire department would be able to help only if they don't have another "more" urgent call.

Can you let the bird out through the house? Turn off all the lights, open a door and try to get the bird to fly out the door or an open window. They will fly towards the light.

liket theother are saying try to smoke it out and block the chimney because it probably already signaled other birds that there is a spot to live(which is in your chimney)

spray water up your chimney somehow, or turn on your vaccumn and let the loud noise scare it out, otherwise call a chimney repair person and they can help

here are some things to do: (not in order by which you should do)

1. Leave it there
2. Light a small fire; scare it out
3. Move a stick up the chimmney to poke it out; or to dislodge it.
4. Leave a radio going in the chimney; it will scare it out.
