Ok I would like to say thank you for all your answers and I happen to like one of the answers about putting in the win98 cd in the boot mode but here is the problem...I don't have the win98 cd. Is there away to skip that part and still uninstall with with just having the xp cd?

If you have an upgrade version of XP then you will need the 98 CD.
That is the bad news :(
The good news is that any 98 CD will do just fine because you don't actually have to install 98.
The XP installation will only check to see if you have the CD one time only :)

If your XP CD is an Upgrade as opposed to a full version, you need an older version of Windows to authenticate the upgrade installation.

Look on eBay for Windows 98 or 95, they're dirt cheap. Also, ask friends or family, almost everyone has an old Windows CD kicking around.

You'll need an original XP cd just place it in the cd drive reboot when it's finished loading the interface just choose the option to format and install windows vista will have gone and XP will be in it's place
you may have to go in to the bios to alter the boot sequence so it boots off cd before the hard disk

Sure, definately you can, just as long as you have XP CD, you're all set. Pop in the CD, reboot your computer, if your computer has set to search for CD before search for HD then just press any key when the screen prompts "press any key to load from CD.....", then just follow the step. When it said you're already have a Windows installed, just hit ESC to continue, then somewhere in there or the next screen, you'll have a chance to delete that and format your computer. Make sure you select NTFS (Quick), more secure and faster than other 3. The whole thing will take roughly 45 mins from start to finish.
