How long until your puppy actually would start telling you that he needed to go outside - by sitting the door, ringing bells, barking = whatever.

We got 2 rotties at once.... Everytime we would go to put them outside we would sit them in front of the door and take one paw and make it scratch the door lightly. Then put them out and leave them do their business, this took 2-3 weeks....they were very young..... they are 3yrs old now and one still does it....the other just sits in front of us and stares. Can't move him away....

After about one month of intense crate training with positive reinforcement (like treats and praise). He's starting to reach sexual maturity now (8 months, small breed) so he loves the opportunity to mark as well. I hope he's not too disappointed next week when he gets fixed. And although we have started to communicate there have still been a few accidents.

Hang in there! I find that communication is encouraged by rewards such as treats and using special toys outside right after potty time. It drives the message home and gets him to jump at the chance to get your approval/treats.

Well, my chihuahua didn't start telling me until he was about a year old. Mainly because while he was growing up (I got him when he was about 3 months old) I put him out after he ate or drank water, and when he woke up from naps, and right before bed. That way there were no accidents in the house, and he was taken out so often that he didn't have a chance to warn me. He started warning me by shaking pretty bad, because he knew it was bad to go in the house (I knew this because I asked him if we wanted to go outside, and he got all excited). Now, he will come up to me and stare at me with his ears straight up and wagging his tail. He understands alot, so I will start asking him what he wants, and when I get it right, he will get all excited and jump around. Or he will go lay down beside the door and wait for me to notice.

Depends alot on the breed and specific dog. My sheepdogs figured it out in a week or two. My Lhasa took about 6 months!

my aussie started telling us at about 6 months. she probably thought she was telling us before hand, but that message didnt get thru. she walks to the door, stares at you, then walks over to you. before it was just walking to the door, hesitate for a second, then peeing somewhere.
