Do you mean joining the Volunteers of America organization, or starting a volunteer pool in your neighborhood? If you start a volunteer pool, though, give some thought to what you will volunteer to do. A canned food drive or coat collection for children, or setting up a collection box at school or work might be something anybody can just get out there and do, but certain things, like serving food to the homeless, may require permits in your city. Other things might require insurance in your town. The law may depend on the age of the volunteers or other factors. Also, be careful of your own safety! There's no force field around do-gooders that keeps them from being hurt or taken advantage of.

a good source is www.volunteermatch.com. If you go here you can be matched up with organizations that fit you, or list your organization, and/or find people in which to volunteer.
Also check out www.meetup.com in order to find clubs and interest groups that may suit you and your interests in your area.
