If you have Symantec Internet Security 2007 (or maybe just Norton Anti-Virus 2007), there is a bug.

My system was freezing too in Normal mode. They told me to run in Safe mode; it ran, but didn't check everything.

Finally I got a message that a new Vista compatible version fixed a bunch of bugs. I downloaded it (free), re-installed, and now the scan runs perfectly. (You do not need Vista for this fix.)

Good Luck

Violetto is right -- You could have too many applications running. Try rebooting (to clear your memory resource allocation, not necessary on most newer computers, but rebooting can help solve a lot of issues) and then run the virus scan with nothing else open/running.

Another problem could be that you already have a virus that is preventing your antivirus from running. Try downloading a free version of another antivirus and see if you can use it to clear up your system.

It could be that a lot of applications were open during the time you were scanning your computer. If so, please close all possible applications to prevent them from using up all your virtual and causing the antivirus scanner to freeze your computer.
