Wow- I totally feel you!!! My fiance and I both had this problem. Yeah- we are in Miami and I really thought that this problem was mostly here. I am shocked to hear about this in NY!
It does not make sense and you have every right to feel angry. Even though we speak mostly English in America, we don't have a "set" language which is pretty stupid too.
Should we move to England where they aren't afraid to say that their native language is English? This bothers me more than anything!! I am not bi-lingual--- I grew up in the USA and can't get a good job because I don't speak Spanish. It just doesn't make any sense!

Well, I understand you, but you must understand also that for some business is interesting that their staff speak some other language different from the native one.
I'm Spanish (living in Spain) and here most business claim for employers who speak English, German or French, of course there're a lot of people who complain about it because if we are in Spain the others should learn our language, but the fact of having a enterprise with people who speak English, helps to make treats with other countries enterprises or even inside our country with other multinational business.

First, it's about money. Corporation want all the customers they can get and if they employees speak several different language then they make more money.
Second, our government is to afraid to make English the official language of the USA by law.
Third, English speaking American do not stand up and tell the corporation that they to not like to hear press 1 for English.

I'm not sure what jobs you were looking to get but I know some sales jobs in Florida require people who speak Spanish because so many of their clients are Spanish.
I agree though, it is kind of ridiculous that we have to learn Spanish for them but I think with times changing and more people coming to America the language changes within time.
I mean, look at the way people used to talk from the 60s to today. Its a big difference. Now w/ the number of Latin Americans that are coming to this country I am predicting that our language along with Spanish will turn into another language in its self.

Its counter racism in a sense. However a lot of it depends on the job and location. NYC is kinda shocking, usually they don't give a rats ***(no offense intended). Its becoming a trend though, the white English people have been discriminating against them selves so they don't appear racist. That's why you can get a full ride scholarship just because your Mexican.

Thats exactly what is the problem by appeasing the illegals. I often wonder what the Chinese, Polish, German, Italian, and other people think that they don't get prefered treatment by the Liberals. Its an insult to everyone else not to have equal treatment. But the Liberals are so desperate to appease the hispanic vote in hopes they win they are willing to sell out their country to do so. Its pathetic. I agree 100%, its discrimination plain and simple. The only thing we can do is yell bloddy murder until they stop with the discrimination. Thats what assimilation is called. English is our official language, learn it, know it, live it or get out.

You might have been turned down for job after job since you seem to not have mastered English yet.
What employer, especially in NYC where you can pick from the world's best talent, would want someone who can't effectively communicate in her own native language?
Go back to school and stop being so afraid of learning.

The jobs you got turned down for probably involved interaction with the general public.
Since many people in NYC only speak Spanish, the job required a person who could communicate with these people.
If you can't communicate with the customers, they will take their business elsewhere. It's a simple matter of making money for the company!

I am having the same issue here in Texas. I can not find a job either. Everyone wants employees that are bilingual---Spanish. It just really makes me angry. I feel they are in the United States and need to learn how to speak English. If you really think about this, this is discrimination. But then in my area, when you go to the grocery store, all you are people, non-English speaking on food stamps. What happens to us Americans?
