There are lots of great breeds of dogs to choose from - make sure you do a little research on what dog maybe best suited to your lifestyle. Know that dogs (especially puppies) require time and attention. Lots of time spent training and interacting with the dog will produce a wonderful pet. Golden retrievers, labradors, german shepherds are some of my favorites (I like big dogs). But there are also smaller dogs like yorkshire terriers that tend to be sweethearts, and collies as well. I would also suggest you not get a dog that is too big for yout to handle. Part of training is being able to establish the dominance over your pet and if you get say, a great dane and you're 13... it probably won't have the same effect as say a yorkie or lab. You should also research health problems of the breed like for instance hip dysplasia is more common in german shepherds which makes it clear to be careful where your dog is coming from. A well bred dog is bred from bloodlines that do not have a history of breed issues. Do some research and when you go look for a dog there is usually one that just pops out and your eyes light up because you know it's special! Good luck =)

May I recommend a Beagle. They are active dogs. They love to go everywhere. They are small enough to fit in a car when you are driving around (in a few years). They love to snuggle. And as a plus, many people are not intimidated by a beagle. I've owned beagles since I was your age and they are the best dogs ever. They can be tricky to house break. But I have found that if you find a REALLY good breeder then you have better luck with this as well. Beagles are a compact dog, without being too small, and they will do everything with you. Another plus, you don't have all that hair to brush. No double layer of fur. Trust me, you don't really want the responsibility of that.

I have a female Boxer that is 10 yrs old, I've had her since she was 6 wks old. She is the sweetest, most gentle dog. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. I took her to obedience class and she still after all this time knows her commands. Boxers are big enough dogs, she is 50 lbs. You will be able to run them in the yard, she loves to fetch Frisbee's and go for long walks. Boxers are even good indoor dogs, if you don't mind a little drool. Mine has a big fenced in yard, but she enjoys coming in also. I know if you choose a Boxer you won't regret your decision.

A Cardigan Corgi is a big dog with short legs (they're like the dogs the Queen of England has, only her's are Pembrooke Corgis--smaller and without a tail). Labradors and Golden Retriever are energetic and have a sweet disposition, but dig and chew as puppies. They're great dogs as adults, but difficult as puppies. Let me offer some more advice--crate train what ever dog you get. That means you put your dog in a crate when you can't watch him/her. It is not cruel. My dogs love their crates--they consider them to be their dens. It will save your shoes, socks, furniture and other chewable objects during times you can't supervise. My lab ate a sofa! Do obedience training asap when you get a dog. Nothing wrong with animal shelter dogs, either. It's always good to rescue an animal. The only thing I avoid with an animal rescue dog is the complete uncertainty of its heritage. I've got a very sweet rescue dog also, but she injures herself by vigorous running because her legs are very frail. I'm sure there are great small dogs, I just don't like the high pitched yapping and I guess I'm a big dog person.

A mutt. They are the best dogs ever. Even better that you love all dogs because mutts have atleast 2 different breeds in them. Go to your local animal shelter to find one. You will get the dog of your dreams and will also save a dogs life.

Well, since you say your active I take it you want an active dog. Most terriers are very active. I have a rat terrier, and I would say he is extremely active. He really likes to run and jump around and go crazy playing. Jack Russel Terriers are also very active.

Any dog in the retriever family would be good, or if you want smaller a terrier. I would also suggest a mutt puppy because you can train them to be anything you want them to be.
