*Understanding the relationship between torque, power and engine speed is vital in automotive engineering, concerned as it is with transmitting power from the engine through the drive train to the wheels. Typically power is a function of torque and engine speed. The gearing of the drive train must be chosen appropriately to make the most of the motor's torque characteristics.
1. AUTOMOBILES are running on different speeds for different reasons:
*initial start up.U can not pick the speed to highest RPM.
*starting torque is high. So, you have to run the vehicle at lower RPM first and agter gradually picking the speed ,u can change the gear and get more speed.
*condition of roads and slope of the road-rising slope required more torque to ride, you have to change the gears to lowest rpm.
*Power(kw)={Pi*rotational speed[RPM]*Torque(N-m)}/30000.
Understanding of above relationship is essential.

Hi

I think the useful of the gearbox is to convert the mechanical motion in the motor to the differentioal, and then from the differentiol to the wheels.

It's a matter of torque versus speed. On hills or when starting you need high torque or the engine will stall. To get high torque you sacrifice speed (vehicle speed).

On the highway while cruising the torque needed to keep the vehicle moving is low, so the engineers sacrifice torque to get speed.

You must have experienced this on a bicycle with gears?

GEAR BOX IS THE COLLECTION OF GEARS ARRANGED OF DIFFERENT SIZES FROM SMALLER GEAR TO BIGGER..
WHEN SMALL GEAR ENGAGES WITH THE BIGGER ONE AND IF IT IS MADE TO ROTATE THE SMALLER WILL TURN FASTER AND TAKES LESSER TIME TO COMPLETE ITS ROTATION SO SPEED IS VARIED HERE..
SO THE PURPOSE OF THE GEAR BOX ARE
1) VARY SPEED DRIVING FOR SMOOTHNESS IN DRIVING VEHICLE
2)VARYING LOAD (HIGH OR LOW LOAD CARRYING TONS OF WEIGHTAGE)
3) MORE PULLING FORCE IN CASE OF VEHICLES CLIMBING THE SLOPE IN MOUNTAINS THEREFORE WHILE CLIMBING NORMALLY 2 0R 3RD GEARS ARE USED SO IT CAN CLIMB EASILY...

Its actual use is to more closely match the speed of engine rotation with the speed of tire rotation. Period. :^)
