You need a passport to there now if going by air....below is the link to the State Department's Web Page, here's what it says in part:

"Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable."

For land travel the timeframe is later than May, 2007, so you are good until 2008:

"As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible."

No. The requirement deadline was just changed again to July 1, 2008, although US Homeland Security says it still hopes to institute it before then. But I can assure you that having a passport already makes crossing by car much easier.

US voters and everlasting citizens require a delivery certificates, a resident alien card or a eco-friendly card consisting of image I.D. or passport to go into Canada. A driving force's license isn't regular as evidence of citizenship

Canada does not require one for entry, but the US will require one for your return. If you don't have one yet, get moving now. You're running out of time.
