I guess it depends upon the age of the child, as far as how devastating the loss is! If they are just children--it's FAR worse than when the child is grown. The loss is physically and emotionally felt, either way--but for a child to lose a parent, factors in terrible fear and loss of security. Death is a part of life and everyone has to deal with the pain. Writing about our parents--a history of their lives; things they said, did and the way they lived their lives, can be very tangible and can be a celebration of their lives and what they truly gave to their children!! Try WRITING.

Well my dad died when I was thirty I loved him very much but I had lived away from home for 10 years.(although we were lived 3 miles from mum and dad at the time of his death)
I was sad but I managed.
6 weeks after his death my 4 year old was diagnosed with cancer(non Hodgkin's) and although he has been successfully treated I found the whole experience of having him go through chemo and the uncertainty of his future far more difficult than losing my dad.

I haven't lost a parent, but I have lost a spouse. You go through life with the knowledge that you are eventually going to lose your parents, that's the circle of life. But you don't expect to lose your spouse until old age.

If you are very close to the parent, maybe so. My mother was very close to her mother and then moved to another town about 3 months after she died. I don't think she ever got over it. We all missed grandma, but my mother and I were never as close as she and her mother.
My sister was very close to mom and still misses her and it has been 41 years this year.
