There is widespread controversy over stem cell research due to the techniques used in the creation and usage of embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cell research is particularly controversial because, with the present state of technology, starting an embryonic stem cell line requires the destruction of a human embryo and/or therapeutic cloning. Some opponents of the research also argue that this practice is a slippery slope to reproductive cloning and fundamentally devalues the worth of a potential human being. Contrarily, medical researchers in the field argue that it is necessary to pursue embryonic stem cell research because the resultant technologies are expected to have significant medical potential, and that the embryos used for research are only those slated for destruction anyway. The ensuing debate has prompted authorities around the world to seek regulatory frameworks and highlighted the fact that embryonic stem cell research represents a social and ethical challenge.

The Church is making a claim that fetus stem cell research will cause more women to have an abortion. They have no reason to think that nor any sound theory on why a woman would want to go through such a tough and emotionaly scaring procedure just so they can research her fetus.
The fact is abortions are happening every day and we have a chance to have some good come out of it and help cure a disease. It is and always will be a huge decision for a woman to have an abortion and what ends up happening to her fetus is not going to make that decision any easier for her.
It's about time the Church completely separated from the State.

There aren't any religious arguments against stem cell research in whole. The problem is with embryonic stem cells, which are derived from fertilized eggs. In this case, the embryo is taken and the "potential" human being is destroyed. This is seen as killing.

Stem cell research based on stem cells taken from existing human beings, from bone marrow or other sources is not seen as an issue because it doesn't involve what is seen as destroying a potential life. (I use "potential" because not all fetrilized eggs will implant in a mother and come to life as a born human being)

Stem cells from embryo's are unique in that they are completely undifferentiated. They can become any sort of cell, and are thus quite useful. Stem cells from existing human beings, or even cord stem cells are not 'as' useful in that they are partially differentiated and are of more limited use.

Anyway, that's the argument as I recall it.

The whole abortion thing boils down to this: people who believe a fetus is 'human' from conception believe that abortion is murder, and people who don't believe that a fetus is 'human' until it has certain human characteristics don't believe it's murder. So it's the Thou Shalt Not Kill commandment that's quoted. Utilizing fetus stem cells, they say (and I don't agree) 'encourages' abortion, or seems to try and make it seem like it's an ok thing to do, even though that not all stem cells used for research comes from fetuses (fetusi?). This argument will never be settled.

Something about it being murder, it's all quite unscientific and it involves a lot of weasel words, appeals to emotion, emotionally loaded words and phrases, that kind of thing. Like saying that someone would have an abortion because they "hate kids and just want to murder them", for example. A fetus is not a child, and abortion is not murder, but they will rewrite the dictionary if they have to.

Cheap tactics, not really based on any kind of logic, not based on concern for the people who could benefit from stem cells, not based on concern for the mothers. It's all about a political agenda, power, and control.

I would like to know too. I understand, though I do not feel its my place to deny abortion to anyone, that they are saying its murder. I have been a mother, its something you know...and I would never have one.

But stem cell...no way...they make you think it has to come from aborted babies, but it does not. We will have stem cell research, no one can stop it. It may not be in the USA, but it will be somewhere.

That life begins at inception and to purposefully take that life is considered murder.

I have no problem with stem cell research, it's fetal stem cell research I have a problem with.

Abortion is a reserve for special cases where one is born in a bad situation. It may be financial, illness, rape, etc. This decision is between you and God. God will understand your situation. Now if if the case is that your birth control pill didn't work and you hate kids with a passion and just want to murder them, that's different.
