MY SON CAME TO ME CRYING ON DAY AND SAID HE DID NOT WANT ME TO DIE. I SAID I AM NOT GOING TO DIE. FROM WHAT. HE SAID BECAUSE I SMOKED. I QUIT. THAT WAS ALL IT TOOK FOR ME. I WANT TO BE THERE FOR MY KIDS AS LONG AS I CAN. I DON'T WANT TO CUT MY LIFE SHORT FOR A CIG.

Not the same situation, but some suggestions that have worked with friends and co-workers.
Tell you mum exactly what you just told us. Tell her how much you love her and want her to be around. Bring up occassions like your wedding one day, your little brother's graduation, things in the future where you all want her to still be around to celebrate with you.
Research the effects of lung cancer and the damage smoking cigarettes does. Print out some gruesome photos and leave them lying around the house. Maybe they'll gross her out and she'll think about stopping.
Maybe even tell her you'll help her quit. When she wants a cig, do something to take her mind off of it. Suggest getting a new hobbie besides smoking.
But make sure you tell your mum just how much you love her and want her to stick around.
Hope this helped and hope all goes well! ♥

Tough question. Your mum and dad are adults and they make their own choices.
1. Don't you ever start smoking.
2. Don't preach or demand they stop - it'll fall on deaf ears.
Smokers know it's bad for their health, they just choose to continue - it's a vice they accept, or can't stop (it's an addiction).
3. You can bring it up from the aspect of how bad it is on you (second hand smoke) - especially if you have papers and projects about smoking at school - get THEM to help you with the projects - let THEM finally realize how bad it is to smoke.
4. Both my mom and dad smoked until a few years ago. My mom quit when she had problems breathing and my dad quit when a buddy of his (A Marine Corps Officer) wasted away to <120 pounds and died of lung cancer. My dad stopped cold turkey after coming home from visiting him in the hospital. He let me and my sister tear up all his cigs and cigars and flush them down the toilet.
Good luck!

Their are support groups to help, but they need to make a commitment, or it's a lost cause. Some people like to smoke others are hooked, it is like a drug. They have different pills, gum patches, etc. but they aren't very good, the group support works best. I think Doctors and the Government need to put more effort into finding a cure, yes I said cure. Also she needs to see a doctor, it may be something else. I had a Uncle that died from lung cancer, he nor his family ever smoked.

I'm in the same boat you are with my girlfriend and grandparents. In my experience I found you should just meet them halfway. Nothing you can do will make them quit. An addict can only quit if THEY want to. So just tell them it bothers you to see them smoke so don't do it around you. I'm sure they'llgo for it. And if they have a short time to live like my grandma. Me and my mother decided that if smoking is one of the only pleasures that she has in her short life then just let her enjoy smoking.
I used to smoke, its WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY harder than a non smoker can ever imagine

Chantix. The Dr must give it to your parents. So if they want to quit they should go to the Dr and ask for Chantix. I took it and in the first week didn't want to smoke. The pills are $100 a month and they need to take them for 3 months but my husband and I used to spend that much a month on smoking. Hope this works for you. Tell your parents Good Luck.

I have that prob with my grandma. Shes been in and out of the doc and had heart surgery and all. So its bad! But she is now smoking the cigs that r supposed to help you quit..the new Quest ciggarrettes. They have dif steps and eventually ur supposed to quit. I really dont think she will quit...she did for like a month or two, but she just cannot seem to. But ask your mom to try the quest steps to quit. Its worth a shot! Good luck

your best option is to be honest, tell them you hate the smoking and if they want to continue you would hope they understand that you would rather not see it. Explain the you and your brother have a right to not be exposed to it. Throw ashtrays away when the smell of them bothers you. Both my parents smoked, we were always on them. The kind of avoided it in front of us just to avoid the nagging.
When my kids were born, my mom gave it up. she decided she wanted to live to see her grandkids grow up. My dad cut back. We also said they could never, ever smoke in front of the grandkids. If their clothes stunk, t5hey wouldn't be able to hold the children.

you cant. My mom smoked, and when I was younger, I tried throwing out her cigarettes, hiding them, flushing them down the toliet, or hiding her lighter. She knew what was going on, it just made her mad. Your parents will want to have to stop even though they love you and will do anything for you the addiciton is so strong that its only them who can make that decision. She developed lung cancer, and still did not stop.

i'm not trying to be mean or scare you, but you just need to tell them flat out. if they keep smoking, they WILL die from it. and if they dont die, something else will go wrong inside their bodies...it's just the facts. and i've lost people to tobacco. it isnt a pleasant death at all. it's usually pretty painful. it's sad to see people addicted to this stuff because i know whats in store for them.

they are very addictive and they have to want to stop. Go to the library and look up the effects of smoking and get graphic pictures and show them what they are doing to themselves.
