Let me see if I get this:
I have Dish Network which offers my locals but not in HD. First of all I have an HDTV with a built in tuner, also my locals are broadcast in HD. Okay, all I need are some rabbit ears from Radio Shack and I can get my locals in HD? Everytime I want to view my locals in HD, do I have to un-hook the satelite and hook the rabbit ears in the coax? Or can I use the HDMI for the rabbit ears, or use the HDMI for the satelite and the coax for the rabbit ears? I don't subscribe to Dish HD. Whew, hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance!!

First, HDTV tuner must be ATSC in order to receive local stations in HD via antenna.
Next, Dish Network box should be hooked up to your HDTV set via HDMI or at least component video in order to get the best signal from the satellite box.
Finally, rabbit ears should be hooked up to the coax input ( since local HD signals are broadcast UHF, make sure those rabbit ears are made for UHF signals).
If you haven't already visited antennaweb, I suggest you do. They will tell you what signals you might be able to get from your location.

Your Dish Network's satellite receiver box should be connected to your TV through the Audio and Video inputs (Yellow - Video; Red + White - Audio). If it was a HD box, you would have HDMI outputs.
Now - the rabbit ear antenna is connected to your TV via coaxial cable. That input is totally different on the TV from the inputs you would use to connect your satellite box.
Once connected, the TV will be able to tune the off-air signals that it can receive from the rabbit ear antenna. All you now need to do is switch between the inputs on your TV to view either your Dish Network channels or the off-air channels.

HD local braodcast can be picked up by normal antenna and yes you will need to connect to your 'cable in' connection on the tv.
Move your Satellite box to HDMI or get a switch box

you would run the rabbit ears straight to your tv and bypass the dish all together
