I have some double paine windows that are low e and some are low e and filled with argon for better insulation. They look and feel, temperature wise, the same. How can you tell the difference?

Without taking it out of the sealed paines and testing it you can't tell. However, you can read the model numbers and serial number off of the window and call the manufacturer with them. The manufacturer can tell you a great deal about the windows. Also, if you have a Silverline window manufactured after 2004, it has argon gas weather you paid for it or not. If you own Andersen windows, call them with the info in the lower right corner of the sash. They can tell you everything you need to know.

If they look and feel the same and one kind doesn't let out more heat (and get colder) then the other why bother to find out.

If you have a burning curiosity about which is which call the builder and ask how you can tell. You could also look inside at the edges of the glass (visible by looking closely into the interior corners) and see if you can spot a part number on any of them. Google that number.
